New Fire Service Magazine Seeking Writers and Photos

Minden, Nevada – American Firefighter, a national monthly magazine making its debut in 1999, is now soliciting stories, articles and photographs relating to firefighting.

Topics sought include residential, high rise and wildland fires. Stories about major accidents, emergency medical services, search and rescue, and swift water rescue are also being called for.

Especially desired are action photos and articles written from an in-the-trenches, as it happened human-interest perspective.

Historical materials on fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis and other disasters are wanted. Other topics include school safety, equipment and training, volunteers, and all aspects of the firefighting profession.

Guidelines for Writers and Photographers

American Firefighter magazine is an official publication of the American Firefighter Family, a Nonprofit Educational Corporation founded to award scholarships, grants and other financial aids to individuals, groups and organizations within the American firefighting community.

American Firefighter is published monthly. Each issue includes featured topics of interest to firefighters and their families, plus regular features and departments.

Regular Features: First-person interviews; historical fires and rescues; educational opportunities; scholarships and grants; firefighter arts, crafts, hobbies, models and collections.

Departments: Training tips; New Gear and Equipment; In the News; In Memoriam (national line-of-duty obituaries); Vacation Getaways; Retirement Adventures; Sports and Recreation; Investment Resources; Toys and Gadgets; Film, Video and Book Reviews.

American Firefighter is read by active and retired firefighters and their wives and husbands, children, and other family members and friends. Articles and photographs submitted to American Firefighter should reflect the human aspect of firefighting experiences as well as the technical. American Firefighter will review books, television and motion picture productions dealing with this nation's most proud and dangerous occupation.

American Firefighter presents the action of firefighting and rescue, told as first-person stories, interviews, follow-up reports and photo spreads, with heavy emphasis on stories that are unusual, innovative, and motivating.

Our readers want to know what special circumstances are encountered in fighting fires aboard a cruise ship; what it feels like to parachute into a wildfire area with your life depending on the equipment in your back pack; the sudden hazards encountered in rescuing victims from a 50-vehicle ice storm pileup.

Submissions: Query first with brief synopsis and SASE. State availability of photos. Submit seasonal material 4-6 months in advance. Length: 500 to 2,500 words. We pay $50 to $500 for assigned articles, $50 to $350 for unsolicited articles; sometimes pay expenses of writers on assignment. Payment upon publication. Byline given.

Photos: Send photos with query or manuscript. We pay $20 to $250 for glossy color prints and transparencies. Negatives and matte or textured prints not accepted. Photos must include captions, identification of subjects, dates and locations. Byline given.

Reports: We report in 4 weeks on queries, 2 months on manuscripts and photos. Publication usually 2-3 months after acceptance.
